Killerwhales Club Championship – 2016
One hundred swimmers from Killerwhales travelled to the Basildon Sporting Village to compete in their 2016 Club Championships. The Club Champs was a great success with twenty-four swimmers securing thirty-eight Essex Age Group Qualifying times for 2017. The Club Champs provide the perfect opportunity for new swimmers to compete for the first time in a competitive Gala, sixteen swimmers attended their first Gala while picking up an impressive twenty three medals, five Golds, eleven Silvers and seven Bronze.
Eleni Caira excelled in the Freestyle events by winning Gold in the 50m Freestyle in 42.21, and Gold in the 100m Freestyle in 1:41.40. Eleni followed this up with a Silver medal in the 50m Breaststroke event in 59.76 and a Bronze in the 50m Butterfly in a time of 59.05. Another first time Gold medallist was Bella Steadman in the 50m Breaststroke with a time of 58.99, Bella also picked up Silver in the 50m Backstroke in 51.54. Leila Jones triumphed with Gold in the 50m Backstroke event with a time of 49.79, while also taking home Silvers in the 50m Freestyle in 44.44 and in the 100m Freestyle in 1:46.23. Niamh Stevenson achieved the last Gold from the debut swimmers in the 100m Backstroke with a time of 1:55.43, Niamh also collected a Bronze in the 100m Breaststroke with a time of 2:11.69.
Christoper Charnick came away with a hat-trick of Silver medals, in the 50m Freestyle in 42.09, the 100m Freestyle in 1:39.53 and the 50m Backstroke with a time of 52.34, Christopher also won Bronze in the 50m Butterfly in 51.16. Aimee Dudman shone in the Breaststroke events by winning Silver in the 100m Breaststroke in 2.08.55 and Bronze in the 50m Breaststroke in 1:00.56. Daniel Freeman swam very well and won his first Silver medal in the 50m Breaststroke in 1:00.35 while following this up with a Bronze in 50m Freestyle in 43.82. Holly Gadsdon took home Silver in the 50m Freestyle with a time of 46.21 and a Bronze medal in the 100m Freestyle in 1:47.74, with Mari-Ann Mahoney winning Silver in the 50m Backstroke in 42.32 and Bronze in the 50m Breaststroke in 44.52. Seven other debutant swimmers swum well on the day and made some good times, Cayden Shanahan, Charlie Rogers, Darcey Mentessi, Luca Biagioni, Sophia Hall, Sienna Sethi and Megan Montanarini.
There were some other great performances in the 9 year old category, Chloe Keegan and Samuel Setford won an impressive Five Gold medals each. Jude Nolan-Day won three Gold medals and a Silver, with Henry Johnson winning Gold and Charlie Woodhouse winning a Gold, two Silver and a Bronze. Other swimmers in the 9 year old category who performed well on the day were Tilly Bunn, Harry Pengally who won two Silvers and a Bronze, Natalie Ahmed with two Silvers, Ramyasari Hanafiah with a Silver and two Bronze medals and Tia Willis with Bronze.
A special mention must also be made to the swimmers competing in the remaining age groups, and to the volunteers and parents who truly made this a great 2016 Club Championships.
