Thirty nine swimmers travelled to Gillingham in Kent to compete in the 2016 Black Lion Open Winter Meet. In another successful weekend of swimming we achieved a total of seventy nine medal placed finishes and seventeen swimmers achieving twenty six new Essex Qualifying times.


In the nine year old age group Jude Nolan-Day won a Gold medal in the 50m Freestyle event with a good time of 34.55, Jude also won a Silver in the 100m Freestyle in 1:20.86 and Bronze in the 50m Breaststroke. Samuel Setford took home a Gold medal in the 100m Breaststroke with a time of 1:53.54, a Silver in the 50m Backstroke in 44.02 and Bronze in the 100m Backstroke. Ella Stevenson added to the silverware in the nine year old age group by winning Silver in the 50m Backstroke with a finishing time of 45.91, Ella followed this up with a third placed finish in the 100m Freestyle event. Chloe Keegan won two Silver medals in the 200m Individual Medley in 3:24.31 and in the 100m Breaststroke in 1:52.46, with Aimee Dudman achieving two Bronze medals in the 50m Backstroke and 100m IM.


Macy Huthwaite had a great weekend in the pool winning Gold across four events, in the 200m Breaststroke with a time of 3:29.46, in the 100m IM in 1:27.92, in the 50m Butterfly in 40.62 and in the 200m Butterfly with a time of 3:08.61. Danny Moody finished in the medal places in the 100m Breaststroke by taking home Bronze in the 100m Breastroke with a time of 2:01.94. 


There were eight medal placed finishes in the 11 year old age group with Poppy Holmes winning a pair of Gold medals in the 400m IM in 6:23.24 and in the 200m Butterfly in 3:05.63. The 200m Butterfly event was an exciting heat with eleven year old Maisie Lawn pushing Poppy to the end, Maisie finished with a Silver medal and a time of 3:06.43. Maisie also won Silver in the 200m IM with a time of 2:57.25 and Bronze in the 50m Butterfly, with Ellie Shanahan also taking home Silver in this age group in the 400m Freestyle with a time of 5:16.06 and Dylan Wood with Silver in the 400m Freestyle in 5:25.29.


In the 12 year old age group Noah Jameson-Neal continued his good form with an impressive five Gold medals and Three Silvers. Noah took home Gold in the 100m Backstroke in 1:15.63, the 200m Backstroke in 2:34.90, the 100m Butterfly in 1:14.78, the 200m Freestyle in 2:22.48 and the 200m Butterfly in 2:42.29. Thomas Dudman had a good swim in the 400m IM with a time of 6:03.79, Thomas followed this up with another good performance in the 400m Freestyle with a Silver medal and a time of 5:26.75. Joshua Frampton took Silver with a good swim in the 200m Freestyle in 2:28.20 and Bronze in the 200m Breaststroke event with a time of 3:10.82. Other medallists in this age group were Isabel Setford with Silver in the 200m Freestyle in 2:35.84, Cerys Freeman with Silver in the 400m Freestyle in 5:28.58 and Angus Robertson in the Backstroke with a 2nd placed finish and a time of 2:49.74.


Thirteen year Christopher Stephens won two Gold medals in the 200m Freestyle in 2:21.22 and in the 200m Butterfly with a time of 2:41.28, then came a Bronze in the 100m Backstroke. Allister Cummins had a good swim in the 200m IM with Silver and a good time of 2:34.73 with other medals coming in the 100m and 400m Freestyle events. Aaron Edwards showed good determination in the 200m Freestyle event finishing with a time of 2:22.99 which earned him a Silver medal, Aaron also swam well in the 50m Butterfly taking Bronze in a time of 34.84 and Silver in the 100m Butterfly in 1:19.22.  The newly awarded Jack Petchey winner Madeleine Sida won a couple of Silver medals in the 100m IM in 1:19.36 and in the 400m Freestyle in 5:05.86, with Rianna Jary taking Bronze in the 400m Freestyle and Miguel Newman securing Bronze in the 200m Butterfly.


Jade Braybrooke swam really well and enjoyed a very good medal haul over the weekend, Jade came away with four gold medals in the 100m Butterfly with a time of 1:13.04, in the 200m Butterfly in 2:42.27, in the 400m Freestyle in 4:50.77 and in the 100m Backstroke in 1:10.94. Not stopping there Jade secured four Silver medals in the 50m Butterfly, the 50m Backstroke, the 200m Freestyle and the 200m IM. Francesca Thomas, the other Jack Petchey award winner picked up Silver in the 14 year old age group in the 200m Breaststroke with a time of 3:03.04 and Bronze in the 200m Freestyle in 2:20.56, with Samuel Little taking home Silver in the 50m Freestyle in 27.24, Silver in the 50m Backstroke in 32.22 and Bronze in the 50m Breaststroke.


Thirteen medals came in the 15 year and over age group with Daniel Sida picking up Gold in the 100m Freestyle in 56.43 and Silver in the 50m Backstroke, 100m Backstroke and the 400m IM. Haashim Hameed Won Gold in the 50m Breaststroke in 35.34 and Bronze in the 50m Freestyle, with Harry Spencer doubling up with Golds in the 400m Freestyle in 4:21.80 and the 200m Freestyle in 2:05.15. Lucie Davis finished with Gold in the 200m Freestyle in 2:16.60, Kate Hill won Silver in the 100m Backstroke in 1:17.79 with Katie Fitzwater winning Bronze in the 200m Freestyle.
